Gardening Tips for January
It may be cold and frosty outside but there’s still plenty to be done in the garden, especially if you’d like your outdoor space to look fantastic when spring arrives. Below are a few gardening tips for January, and don’t forget that we can do all of these tasks for you if you’d prefer to sit back and relax.
Clean pots and greenhouses
Autumn is a particularly messy time of year and winter only adds to the untidiness, so take January as an opportunity to have a clean-up before everything begins to sprout and bloom once again.
Plant pots, greenhouses and patios can all be scrubbed and wiped down, removing pesky algae, dead leaves, moss and grime in the process. Aside from making the garden look much better, cleaning out pots and greenhouses also means they’re ready for planting later on.
Prune apple and pear trees
If you’re lucky enough to have one or more apple or pear trees in your garden, now’s the time to prune them back a little. They don’t need too much cutting, just a little tidying up so that the trees have room to breathe and can start producing delicious fruit later in the year.
Recycle your Christmas tree
Did you have a real tree this Christmas? If so, you can chop it up or even shred it if you have suitable equipment. Small pieces can then be added to your mulch, plus larger logs make great fuel if you’re planning on having a garden fire on a starry night.
Put out water for the birds
This is a difficult season for our feathered friends, as puddles and other water sources freeze over. This includes bird baths, which will become skating rinks rather than a social space where the birds can rehydrate.
Remember to crack the ice in your bird bath each morning and replenish the water, as this way it will remain an easily accessible spot for them to have a drink during the coldest months of the year.
Plan your vegetable crops
It’s also a good time to decide what you’ll be growing this year. Whether it’s carrots and spuds, tomatoes and strawberries, rhubarb and green beans or a variety of aromatic herbs, have a think about what you’d like to use in your recipes so that you’re all set for spring.
